Sharpcast was formed in 2004 by a team of wireless and consumer Internet industry veterans. They created the company to make our ever increasing digital life easier to manage. The company is creating solutions that enable people to have access to their data, easily, no matter what kind of files they are, or where the users are.

Their first product, launched in March 2008 is SugarSync. SugarSync is built on the proprietary Sharpcast Universal Sync Platform that they created.

They offer both a free service and a paid services. The free service allows anyone who signs up for the free service to store up to 2GB of data and sync it across 3 devices for no charge. They also offer 4 paid plans starting at under $50/Year and allow syncing across as many devices as you have.

This is a great service if you are looking to accomplish online file storage, online file syncing, offline file syncing, remote access to your files, online editing of your files, ability to send files of any size (via online file sharing) and finally, online backup and archiving. You can also stream podcasts, play your personal music files, view your photo albums, and share them. Unique to SugarSync is the “Web Archive” feature that stores your files permanently and is not part of the file syncing process. This feature enables true backup and archive capabilities.

Information obtained from the company website, Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, May-June 2009.

Website: sugarsync.com

Contact: support@sugarsync.com

Company: Sharpcast, Inc.

Location: Palo Alto California USA

Telephone: 650-323-1960

Operating since: 2004, with product launch in 2008

Summary: SugarSync provides online file storage for personal or business users, online file editing for most file types and online file sharing, both public and private. They also offer online backup with real-time syncing across PCs, Macs, iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile Devices. They offer a 2GB plan for free, and then offer 4 paid account plans of increasing storage capability. The free plan works on up to three computers, but any paid plan works on an unlimited number of computers. You can define what you want to replicate at any time. File versioning keeps track of the latest 5 versions of the file that you can go back to at any time. SugarSync also plays streaming music files and has photo album storage and sharing capability.

Details: You can store some or all of your files across as many computers as you. SugarSync keeps them all sync using their software and your files are available to you anywhere you are connected to the Internet. If you have a connection to the Internet with a Web Browser (on any PC or mobile phone / PDA) you are able to access your data.

Free SugarSync account available: Yes, 2GB free that syncs up to 3 devices. Upgrading to a paid account allows you to sync across as many computers as you have.

Paid SugarSync account available: Yes, 4 plans are available. All paid plans include syncing for multiple computers (no limit) $49.99/Year for 30GB, $99.99/Year for 60GB, $149.99/Year for 100GB and $249.99/Year for 250GB.

Single file size limit: No limit from SugarSync with one exception and a recommendation. The exception is because web uploads are not as robust as uploads managed by their software, they limit web uploads to 100MB files or less. It is recommended that files be uploaded using their syncing software, which works on files up to 2GB. On files over 2GB, they are kept in sync across computers using the sync software.

Free Trial: Yes, 30 Days to see if it works for you.

Platforms supported: Windows 32-bit XP, Vista or Mac OS X 10.4 and higher. (This author tested the software on 32 bit XP and on 64 bit Vista Ultimate. Please note that their website does not show support for Vista 64 bit, but I experienced no issues with it). The build of the client software used for testing was 1.6.3.47107.20090522. Other platforms supported by the client software are iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices. Web browser access is also supported.

SugarSync client software download required for use: Yes, for file synchronization activities and file uploads larger than 100MB.

Online File Backup Details

Designed for easy online file backups: Yes. Though not a traditional online backup service or approach, SugarSync does have a web archive that’s used for file archive. That location is used for files that you want to have a copy of that don’t necessarily exist on your computer. It’s not a backup service in the normal sense of the word, but it works. This is not the same location that all of the files that you sync are stored, so it does not interfere with normal file synchronization processes.

Completely automatic backups: Yes, for all the computers, directories and files that you want copied to SugarSync. Once you tell it what you want to sync (and by default, back up) it will automatically keep an eye on all of the files and locations that you note. If anything changes, it knows that right away, and sends the file/s up for syncing & backup.

User defined backups: Yes

User defined bandwidth option for backups and restore process: Yes

Can data be sent to SugarSync to seed the initial backup: No

Support for backup of attached USB drives: No

Support for open and locked files: No – If you are considering using the service for backup purposes, make sure files are closed first.

Tracking and storage of multiple versions of files: Yes - Up to 5 versions are stored by the service. If you want to keep a particular version of a file, you can put it into the web archive. (The web archive is a place where you can manually copy and move files around that is not the same as the synced file storage location).

Can multiple PCs files be backed up using one backup account: Yes – Using the Web Archive feature.

Can servers be backed up: No

Designed for easy online file restore: Yes

Designed that data be restored via web browser: Yes, though the client software would be more efficient for downloading as it is uploading.

Designed so that data be sent to you on DVD, Hard Drive or other device: Not Applicable

Livedrive was launched in December 2008 after two years of development. It was founded by Andrew Michael in the UK. He founded Fasthosts, a large hosting company in the UK and he sold it in 2006 for $120 million. He and his team have been working on the vision of Livedrive since then.

Livedrive is available in two plans; The Standard plan provides 100GB of space while the Pro is unlimited. The real bonus is while you can only use it on one computer in the Standard plan; you can install it on unlimited computers in the Pro plan. Using the Pro plan with unlimited space and unlimited computers means that you can take advantage of the file synchronization across all of your computers so that your local files would match those on Livedrive. Additionally, the Pro plan provides priority upload speed priority over Standard plan to the Livedrive servers. Each plan also comes with FTP access to your files and Facebook integration. Livedrive added a backup capability to their product in August 2009, so not only do they have online file backup, they also have online archive of all your files.

Great service if you want to store all of your data on the Internet and access it from almost anywhere using a web browser, phone or FTP. You can also edit Office files and Open Office files and image files using only a web-browser. File sharing is available for public and private sharing of files. An online media player supports videos, photos and music online.

Information obtained from the company website, Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, May 2009. Updated in September 2009 with online backup information added.

This article will discuss Data Backup Solutions overall and will provide a number of items that need to be considered when considering the right solution for your needs. (...)

This article will discuss Data Backup Solutions overall and will provide a number of items that need to be considered when considering the right solution for your needs. This article will focus on the needs of the individual user and small to medium sized business owner.

For both users, you must know, or at least consider the five following items when considering a data backup solution.

 1. What type of data are you going to be backing up? (Word Processing Files? Spreadsheets? E-mail? Databases? Audio Files? Video Files? Image Files? They all have unique characteristics and impacts to backup requirements).
2. How much data are you going to backup up and how often?
3. How rapidly do you expect the data to grow in volume? (Industry experts forecast data growth at 30%-70% per year. If you don’t know how fast your data will grow, plan for 50% growth year over year).
4. How long do you need to retain your backups? How many copies of backups do you want to keep?
5. Are there any regulatory or legal reasons to retain, or destroy data after a given period of time?
6. Do you want to manage and own the backup and backup process yourself, or is it something that you would rather not have to deal with?
7. How much is your data worth? What would the financial and legal impact to your personal or business finances be if your data was lost, either because of accidental erasure, malicious intent, fire, theft , water damage, some other loss type or just a hardware failure of the hard drive.

Once you know the answers to the seven questions above, that will help you in determining the particular requirements for your Data Backup Solution. For some people, it might be as easy as using a USB memory stick to backup their limited number of files, for others, it might be burning a DVD with up to 4.7GB of data every night or weekly using a simple copy and paste process in Windows. For those users that need to backup more data, they may want to invest in an external USB hard drive or two. Copies of data can be placed on each hard drive and each drive could be alternatively taken to an offsite location on alternate days, each with a recent copy of data. Still, other people may not want to go to all that effort and risk (what happens if a hard drive is left somewhere accidently or is stolen from a car/truck that it was sitting in?). For many people today, they are considering online, Internet based file backup solutions.

As you consider the options, also think about how easy it is to restore files when a data loss is sustained. If you have very limited needs, such as could be met with using a USB flash memory drive, your restore time could be as fast as taking the memory stick out of your pocket or purse and copying the files back to the computer. If your demand for backup is greater than what would fit on a flash drive, you might copy and restore from a DVD, though current Flash Memory sticks can hold more than a DVD Drive. Most users, if backing up locally, will opt for an external USB based hard drive. They are available and are inexpensive and copying take place at hard drive speed.

Of final note, don’t forget about security and encryption when it comes to backup media. While you likely lock your offices up at night, if you take your data with you, it should be encrypted or at least, password protected. If you use an online data backup solution, that’s already taken care of, and you have one less thing to carry around with you.

One of the most important aspects of the backup process is safeguarding your information. (...)

How local and remote encryption protects your data

One of the most important aspects of the backup process is safeguarding your information. If you are entrusting your personal or corporate data to a third party for safe storage or backup, then adequate safeguards must be taken to ensure that the data remains private. Two of the leading online file backup service providers, Mozy and Carbonite, each use encryption to provide an Online Secure Data Backup.

MozyHome gives you the ability to select your data encryption key (a string of numbers and letters that only you would know), with 256-bit AES encryption. Your data is encrypted on your local hard drive before it is sent to the Mozy systems, OR you can let MozyHome generate a 448-bit Blowfish key that handles the encryption. Either way, the actual transfer of data between your computer and server is encrypted using 128-bit SSL encryption, the industry standard for safe and secure data transfer.

Carbonite also encrypts data on the computer or server before it is backed up, and encrypts it again during the transfer to their systems. Carbonite uses a combination of Blowfish and DES III (Triple DES) encryption.

Keep in mind that if you chose to encrypt using your own key, none of the providers will be able to decrypt your data. That goes for you as well, should the key be lost or forgotten over a period of time.

From a performance perspective, since the data on your computer or server is already encrypted before being sent up to the service providers, there should be very little performance impact on the day to day operations of your computer or server, though that could change over time.

Several key factors in addition to the matter of security to consider are the amount of data you expect to backup and how fast your connection is to the Internet for upload purposes. Both of those values will impact how quickly your initial backup takes place, though it will be less of an impact on subsequent backups (known generally as incremental or synthetic fulls).

Both companies and others in the market today offer Online Secure Data Backup services for individuals and companies. Please compare their features before determining which one provides the services you require at a cost you deem acceptable.

Online Backups are a fast and easy way to get started backing up your personal computer data or data that resides on your server. (...)

Online Backups are a fast and easy way to get started backing up your personal computer data or data that resides on your server. The services are becoming more and more robust each day, and the pricing is very economical when compared to other options.

The backup process ranges from the simple to the hands off and visual cues in Windows for example, can let you know whether a file is backed up, about to be backed up or not in the backup process.

If you don’t currently perform backups, you risk catastrophic data loss in the event that your hard drive fails, and it will fail. It’s just a matter of time, that’s a fact. Hard drive crashes are never pretty, though sometimes you can get some of the information off the damaged hard drive, but it’s seldom an easy or inexpensive process.

If you have a high-speed or broadband Internet connection, I’d highly suggest using the services from an online backup service provider such as Mozy or Carbonite. If you don’t have a high speed Internet connection, I would suggest the purchase of at least one external USB hard drive for use to backups Windows XP systems and Linux systems with appropriate Backup Software. If you can, have two external drives so that one can always be off-site or stored at another location.

If you do have a high-speed connection, Online Backups should work well for you. One thing to keep in mind is that the initial backup might take hours, days or even weeks to complete. It depends on how much you are backing up as well as how fast you can upload the data to the Online Backup service provider.

If you are looking to perform Online File Backup, there is a key question to ask. What is your definition of Online File Backup? There are two ways to interpret the statement. (...)

If you are looking to perform Online File Backup, there is a key question to ask. What is your definition of Online File Backup? There are two ways to interpret the statement. One answer would refer to how to backup files using the Internet and a service to remotely backup the files on a personal computer or a server to a remote site easily. The other way the statement could be interpreted is referring to how to backup files that are “open” or “online” and available for users to work with.

I will make the assumption that you are looking for something to help you in backing up files online, instead of backing up “open files”.

There are many advantages of using an Online File Backup Solution for many individuals or people that own a small to medium sized business. Using the services is easy, but in the end, knowing whether or not you have a successful backup is still in the hands of the user. One of the advantages is that you don’t have to spend a lot of money on more disk drives, tape drives or backup tapes nor do you have to pay someone to help you with backups daily. Of course, that means that it comes down to you to make sure that your backups are running as you expect them to run. This should only take a minute or two every day; it’s not something that you should have to spend much time thinking about, just make sure that it’s working.

When determining to perform your backups using an Internet based service provider, make sure that you understand the features and benefits of each service you review, and know what your needs are before making your selection. Oh, and just so I don’t forget to share this, many of the services available today for online file backup do backup open files, or online files. A great example of that is Microsoft Outlook.

It’s also important to understand how fast of an Internet connection you have, and not just how much you can download, but how fast your upload speed is, because that’s how your data will get to the service providers storage systems to hold your data. The faster you can upload your backup, the less time it will take. This is a key factor for the initial backup, though it’s less important for subsequent daily backup when much less information is sent up to the service provider.

If you are not already doing a daily or weekly backup of your personal computer or server or servers, you should start right away. Hard drives fail, that’s a fact. Online File Backup is an inexpensive insurance policy for your data, for your business. Compare what is available today, the features change monthly and the pricing is just getting better and better.

There is no shortage of Backup Solution options available today, although a number of standard best practices have emerged throughout the years. (...)

There is no shortage of Backup Solution options available today, although a number of standard best practices have emerged throughout the years.

If you are a home user backing up to an Internet service, these questions are not critical. If however, you are backing up hundreds of Terabytes, you should probably consider the questions below as they are good things to keep in mind:

1. How much data do you need to backup?
2. What kind of data are you backing up? (simple files like word processing files and spreadsheets, or complex multimedia files that include image, audio and video files)
3. What is the daily change rate of your information? (5% daily? 10%?, 20%?, more?)
4. How rapidly does your data grow? (Recent industry estimates range from 30% to 70% growth, year over year).
5. How long do you have to retain the information that you backup?
6. How many copies of the data do you need to retain and for how long (are their legal / regulatory reasons that you have to keep several copies of the data?).
7. How “current” does the data backed up need to be? Does the rate of change drive hourly backups? Daily backups? Weekly backups?
8. Would you expect a full backup every time a backup took place, or would you expect a full backup weekly, with just what changed to be backed up nightly, for example (incremental backups).
9. How long would be an acceptable time to recover the data backed up? For example, if you made a full backup on Sunday, and it took till Wednesday of the following week to recover your data, would that be acceptable? That would be at least a 72 hour recovery window, and your data would be at least 72 business hours old.
10. If you needed to, how long would it take to obtain another computer or server to recover the backup to? (In the event that the main computer or server was not available). Whatever time is needed to put in place another PC or server, needs to be added to the recovery time overall, elongating the recovery process.

The following types of backup solutions are available options for individuals or small companies:

Disk to Tape Based Backup: Computers attached directly to local tape drives, where data is copied to. Easy to remove tapes from site for safe keeping, though cost per MB may be high and recovery time is slow for random files. Not always efficient if backing up small amounts of data or single files. Limitations on tape size may be problematic. Tape storage and cataloging is not always easy, and tape costs are often more than expected over the lifetime of the backup retention time.

Disk to Disk Based Backup: Computers attached to a network, or local USB type hard drive, where backup software can select the additional hard drive as the target for backup data. Easy, fast and reliable way to move large amounts of data backed up among stand alone computers or network servers and PCs. It is usually faster to perform backups to disk rather than tape. It is almost always faster to restore from Disk, unless just restoring sequential files. Easy to backup and restore single files and cost per MB stored and retained is compelling over the lifetime of the stored data.

Disk to Disk to Tape Based Backup: This is the same as Disk to Disk, with the exception that due to regulatory reasons, it may be a requirement that the user have a copy of the data stored on Tape. In this case, the backup from disk to disk is fast and the subsequent disk to tape copy can be done at any time and does not interfere with the regular use of the computer system with which the data was copied from.

Disk to Disk to Remote Disk Based Backup: This is the same as Disk to Disk, with an additional safeguard of transmitting a copy of the data to a remote site onto another disk for safekeeping in the event of a local disaster. This can be easily done today either using a company network connection from one site to another, or by way of a local backup, being sent to an off-site backup service provider.

Internet Based Backup Solution: This solution is gaining more ground everyday with individuals and small to medium size business owners. Several companies offer the service and it is one of the easiest to use. It effectively outsources your backup process to the Internet Based Service Provider, and the data to be backed up travels across the Internet connection (encrypted) to the remote site, where your data is stored on the third party storage systems.

No matter what your requirements are, there is a company with Backup Solutions that will work for you. Many products can take care of backing up your PCs' or Servers for your data and databases locally or across the Internet. The main thing is to backup the data and make sure you can restore it when you need to. In the last couple of years, data deduplication technologies have also really been catching on, and their benefits are enormous. They can save hours and days of time and space on your storage arrays, saving you money from many perspectives. Data deduplication can also work along with other technologies.

What is an Internet Backup and why should you be using it? (...)

What is an Internet Backup and why should you be using it?

Although one might say that an Internet Backup is something that Google does when they index the contents of websites throughout the planet every day, that’s not typically what the term Internet Backup generally means in popular terms.

An Internet Backup, most of the time, refers to a method by which individuals and small business owners, use the services and assets of several companies with which to make a remote copy of some or all of their digital data stored on their computers. At its most basic form, it uses software that is installed on the computer to be backed up, connected to the Internet by some type of high-speed connection (Cable or DSL usually), and data is sent to the remote backup companies servers and storage systems for safekeeping, and retrieval when needed again.

In practice, most individuals and small business owners already have some methods to create and manage local backups. It’s often the last thing that someone remembers to do, and it may consist of writing certain files to any number of types of storage media.

So how does the Internet Backup work today?

The short explanation is that once you select the Internet Backup provider, based on your needs, you will install a small program that is offered by the vendor onto whatever computers you are going to backup with the service. This program will manage your backups and you will be able to customize your backup to suit your needs. Over a period of time, which could be hours, days, or weeks, your data will be backed up to the Internet Backup companies’ remote site.

Once your initial backup is complete, the only data that will usually be sent to their servers is whatever data that has changed on your computer. This makes subsequent backups faster and they take place anytime files are updated, often without your knowledge or any action required by you.

The programs will often have a control panel of some type, to let you know how much you have backed up and the status of the backup, and any other information that is of value.

When you need to restore your data, you should be able to select which files or directories that you wish to recover, and they will be transmitted back down to your computer, or another computer if desired. You should also be able to change the recovery directory if desired.

The amount of time required to upload your initial and subsequent backups is relative to the amount of data you are backing up, your bandwidth speed and availability to the Internet, and how busy your computer is.

Encryption is strongly recommended, whether you encrypt your data before sending it off (preferred) or whether you allow the Internet Backup provider to encrypt your data.

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting an Online Data Backup Service. (...)

There are a number of factors to consider when selecting an Online Data Backup Service. Most individuals and owners of small companies today are learning, because of either a hard drive crash or a stolen computer, just how valuable that having an offsite data backup or Internet backup / web backup are.

Individuals are turning to online backup or online file backup sharing services more and more as their volume of information grows and is harder to manage. For individuals and Small to Medium sized businesses (SMB) it is still valuable to keep a local backup for speedy and quick recovery of data, but having it stored using an online backup or Internet backup makes it easy to retrieve as well.

As mentioned above, some of the factors to consider when selecting an Online Data Backup Service include:

* How much data do you expect to have in the initial backup?
* How long do you expect it will take to upload your initial backup? Depending on your Internet connection speed, it will take some time to upload your backup, perhaps days or weeks.
* The number of the versions of the files you expect to keep, so that you can recover older versions
* The type of data that you are backing up (is your data mostly text, spreadsheet files or are they images and binary data such as video and audio files? (Text files are more easily compressed and deduplicated than any changes in media files would be discovered).
* Is file and data encryption required before you upload your data, or after? Many of the larger Internet Backup services offer data encryption, either as your computer is uploading the files to the remote location, or once the data is located on their storage systems. The questions are; do you want to send encrypted data to the service (so they can’t see the data contents at all, or are you willing to upload your data un-encrypted (someone there could potentially see your data).
* How easy is it to restore files from the Online Data Backup Service?
* Do you have to backup any open files or will they all be closed when backing up (unlikely). Be sure the service you select can backup open files if this is a requirement.
* Are you backing up any database files, such as Oracle, SQL, Access or anything else? Pay special attention to how those files are backed up and restored / recovered.
* Is it important for you to be able to share files online with someone else? If so, how easy is it to do with each service you are considering? How large a file can you share? Are there any limitations?
* Do you have more than one computer or server to backup online? There may be additional fees to consider such as a license per PC to backup or by GB backed up.

No matter how you are considering using an Online Data Backup Service, they have become a game-changer in the way that both individuals and Small to Medium sized businesses look at backup today. Be sure to consider the points mentioned above when making your decision.

Although there are many reasons and benefits for using a Web Backup Solution, I thought it might be good to list out the top reasons for using such a method to protect your files. Most people don’t do backups of their data as often as they should, and doing it via the Internet makes it an easier thing to get done.

First and foremost, a current, good, backup of your data can save your business should your computer or server sustain a failure.

Ease of use - Once you setup the backup, they run automatically. That is one less thing to worry about remembering to do during a busy day on the go or at the office.

Offsite data backup – One of the tenets of a good backup strategy is to have the backup media offsite, and away from the system that contains the data backed up. By using this method for backups, that goal is achieved.

Simplified recovery – Since you can recover your files with the point and click of a mouse, it makes the restoration of recovery files easy and simple. The only limitation is the speed of your Internet link for downloading the files to be recovered.

Cost effective backup and recovery solution – For most personal and small to medium sized business owners, this type of solution provides a great benefit at very good price point.
